The African Honey Bee
The
African Honey bee, also known as the 'Killer bee' is one of the most
mysterious insects known to man. Very similar to the European honey
bee, Africanized honey bees travel in large numbers and are said to
attack even when not provoked. The ancestors of the Africanized Honey
Bee live throughout Europe and Africa.
They are known to defend their nests in an aggressive manner, hence the name the 'killer bee' was given to them. They only sting once if they feel attacked or in danger. They attacks or stings can be dangerous because when they attack they do so in large numbers, which can prove to be lethal.
People have been known to have been killed by these bees. As with other bees it is safest to steer clear and not provoke them.
They nest anywhere that is safe from danger or bad weather. They build their nests in:
- Hollow trees
- Stumps
- Holes in the ground
- Bushes or Shrubs
- Drain pipes
African honeybees are highly protective of their nests and young and will attack any coming intruders for several hours at times.
They are important producers of:
- Honey
- Beeswax
They are major players in the process of pollination, both of crops and of flowering plants.
Should you encounter a swarm of 'killer bees' it is importatnt to get out of the area as quickly as possilbe and to report the swarm as soon as you can. Calling a bee keeper or a bee remover would be your best coice.

Killer bee activity
In June this year a farmer met an untimely death after a run in with Africanised honey bees also known as killer bees. He disturbed a hive with his tractor. In attempting to get away the farmer ran and tried to hose the bees down with water. He unfortunately did not survive the attack.
Scientists have tried to explain why these bees attacked the farmer. In their investigation it was once again noted that a lawn mower could cause bees to swarm, even from a couple of houses away, it is believed that this is because of the vibration of the lawn mower.
The Africanised honeybee, although slightly smaller than their European counterparts deliver the same amount of venom per sting and are possessed of an aggressive temperament. In an attack by swarms of bees, the victim will likely be stung up to ten times more by the Africanised bee than by it's European counterpart.
It is claimed that Africanised honeybees resulted from a bee breeding
experiment that went horribly wrong. The number of Africanised honey
bees across the USA continues to increase.
